especially one kept as the symbol of an organization
such as a sports team.”

Dictionary explains the word mascot has been traced
back to ‘mascoto’ used
in Provence and Gascony, France, where it was used to
describe anything that brought luck to a household.
Other connotations of the word mascot include witchcraft,
