person, animal, or object believed to bring good luck,
especially one kept as the symbol of an organization
such as a sports team.”
The Online Etymology
Dictionary explains the word mascot has been traced
back to ‘mascoto’ used
in Provence and Gascony, France, where it was used to
describe anything that brought luck to a household.
Other connotations of the word mascot include witchcraft,
charms, and amulets. It was first used in 1867, France.
